Ben Rein

Dr Ben Rein is a neuroscientist, educator, and science communicator whose work explores the biology of human connection and its impact on health and wellbeing. He has conducted research on social behaviour, empathy, and the neural mechanisms that shape how we relate to one another, with appointments at Stanford University and the University at Buffalo.

Ben is the author of Why Brains Need Friends: The Neuroscience of Social Connection, which examines the growing evidence that meaningful social relationships are fundamental to both mental and physical health. Through his research and public engagement, he helps translate complex neuroscience into practical insights about loneliness, empathy, belonging, and the importance of human connection in modern life.

Ben is an advisor to Oxford Mindfulness, providing expertise and guidance on the science of social connection and what neuroscience can teach us about the relationships, communities, and everyday interactions that support healthier and more connected lives.
